The fear of God is the soul of godliness. The emphasis of Scripture in both the Old Testament and the New requires no less significant a proposition. Whether it be in the form, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom” (Proverbs 9:10; Psalm 111:10) or “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge” (Proverbs 1:7), we are advised that what the Scripture regards as knowledge or wisdom takes its inception from the apprehension and emotion which the fear of God connotes.
